My Every Other Saturday.

Written by A-Ryeon, Ji

From this semester, Ive volunteered one of the Saturday programs for handicapped children. When they dont go to school every 2nd and 4th Saturdays, we gather to do scheduled activity at Daegu University. We make drawing, perform Korean drum, hold a sports day and tour where children want to go.

A team is comprised with one volunteer and one child. Every other Saturday, we meet near child home, every morning start picking him up. My partner child is 15 and he has a speech disorder. He is an introvert person so I spent long time to become friends with him. At the first time, He said only I dont know or No. Hed never showed his feeling and opinion to me. But, nowadays he talks a lot with jokes.

Before, I didnt think much about handicapped peoples inconveniences to live in our society because it was not my problems. However, after I meet them, Im becoming more sensitized to their problems. People can not divide with normal and handicapped. I felt that we are not different, they can think and feel like you. So we have to respect them as a same person because they also hurt when you look them strange or belittle them. I hope the day will come early that PEACE To everyone & In everywhere .

  1. That's a touching story about the introverted child with a speech disorder. It must mean so much to him to have someone like you help him. We can't imagine the long-term impact that can have.

  2. You look gorgeous:)! I'm happy to hear that he talks longer than before to you. Maybe it's because he wants to be close to you. It seems that he opened his mind to you! I think you can be a good mentor, and a friend to him.

  3. wow..... you are doing such a priceless job..
I heard they acted cold at the beginning not only because they were introvert, but also they were afraid of losing people when they opened and actually needed them. It's very sad. There are a few children that have disorder in my church, and I also try not to look at or treat them differently from other children.
I hope you remain a good friend to him :) -jiwon

  7. I have already known your major. While reading your story, I bet you are SO SO SO kind teacher and beautiful angel to the introverted child with a speech disorder. In my case, when I was 19 years old, I have ever volunteer students who are handicapped. It was difficult for me to volunteer someone who is handicapped. But, while volunteering, I felt happy, pleased and delighted. Being teacher is also not easy. Nevertheless, how did you teach them very well and find this volunteer program? I believe volunteering is very special experience if I have chances, I also want to volunteer like you. I can do my best and spend my all time to them. Anyway, like you said, Volunteer work gives me great pleasure and my life purpose. So, I bet many friends must be very proud of you! ^.^
